How long have you been a part of the Holistic Health and Fitness (H2F) Program?
I have been part of the H2F Program for about a year and a half.
What is something you’ve learned during your time in the H2F Program?
Something that I have learned during my time in the H2F Program is that teamwork truly makes the dreamwork. I have had the opportunity to work with multiple divisions of the H2F program to improve the health and performance of soldiers. I have seen soldiers improve quickly from physical conditions when they are utilizing, or have utilized, multiple divisions of the H2F Program.
What does your typical workday look like?
My typical workday includes attending morning physical training. I will evaluate any acute injuries that occur during PT and I modify the H2F Strength and Conditioning Coaches programming to fit within a soldier’s profile. Then I will begin to see patients regarding musculoskeletal injuries. I present educational materials to soldiers as requested.
In your Athletic Training career, what challenges have you had to overcome and how did you accomplish this?
In my Athletic Training career my biggest challenge was the transition from working in the traditional setting (athletics) to the tactical setting (H2F). This transition was difficult for me because I had to learn how to work with the population. Working with soldiers brings different difficulties and advantages than working in athletics. I overcame this by working one-on-one with other Athletic Trainers on JBLM to get accustomed to the population, training calendars, and learning the most common injuries sustained in the U.S. Army. Also, I was able to evaluate with, and learn from, the active duty Physical Therapist I currently work with. He was understanding of the patients I was used to working with; he helped me better understand how to work within the Army population as well as what soldiers’ typical days looked like.
What is one thing you’d tell your younger self if you had the opportunity?
One thing I would tell younger self is to get a Masters degree right after graduating with my bachelors.
Who has provided the biggest inspiration / motivation in your life?
My mom has provided the biggest motivation in my life. She has taught me to work hard; nothing is handed to you. Also, she has been my biggest supporter and has made the biggest impact with advice when I ask for help with life decisions. Actually, she did not know what an Athletic Trainer was before I became one. Now that I am one she is an AT supporter and advocate. There is no way I would be where I am in life without her.
